Nice V, Vol.1 : Top 5 From PALP Festival (August 14, 2023 in Bagnes, Switzerland)

Hey everybody, Rowdy here. We’re trying a new monthly column (Nice V!) where a different site team member rounds up some notable, favorite, or just downright awesome tracks (or shows or albums, etc.) for your listening pleasure. We’ll share what we love about the music and unearth some hidden gems (which can all be found on our very own Gizztapes.)

This month, I’m building a top five from a specific show I come back to easily once a week; probably safe to call it my favorite show I haven't attended. I’m definitely revealing my psych rock lean here but King Gizzard's performance from PALP Festival 2023 is just so dense with great moments.

Phantom At the Opera: Sydney '25 Recap

Everything changes when you become a parent, least of all you’ll probably stop going to live music for about 14 months. Not that seeing Gizzard in Australia was easy before that: my last show was a short festival set at Splendour in the Grass 2023, and my last full headline show was mid-July 2019 night 1 at Sydney's Roundhouse. So on the train into night 2 of the Phantom Island orchestral tour at the Sydney Opera House, I could hardly believe where I was and what I was about to see, let alone the following night at the Enmore Theatre that I had added on just a couple of weeks prior.

Obsession Is Good For You: EU Spring Tour '25 - the Sights and Sounds Of Athens

There were some absolutely amazing venue choices on this EU 25 Spring tour and my decisions on which pair to hit were largely based on the venues. With so many tempting choices, Athens quickly took hold as a non-negotiable for me. Not only is it an amazing city that is shrouded in history, it offered one of the most unique venues that I had laid eyes on. As an photographer, the pull of that venue could not really be denied. The chance to shoot KGLW in a venue on top of a hill in Athens with views of the Acropolis, Aegean Sea, Athen’s distant lights and mountain ranges was an unparalleled opportunity. Tossing in the chance of a Magma closed the deal on this one.

EU Residency Infographic

So what’s this post all about and why should you read it? Well to start, there’s a lot to unpack for a band that streams every show live and releases the subsequent soundboards shortly after, developing an official live catalogue that far exceeds their already elaborate and fantastically excessive studio output. I started tracking live Gizz after my first show at Radius, Chicago in October 2022, contributing to this website in early 2024, and compiled an infographic (link here) for the band’s first fully released tour in North America at the end of last year.

This 2025 European residency tour is my second attempt to visually analyze the musical performance of each show of a certain period in the band’s live history. A link to the full PDF of the infographic is available here.
