“I’m Sleepin’ In” is a mid-tempo track with a chill groove fleshed out through harmonica, guitar and Mellotron. It also features some of the most unique production on Gumboot Soup with the track speeding up and slowing down at different times, giving it a dreamlike quality. Lyrically the song is simple, commenting on how Stu needs to rest after so much work. Stu has stated that the creation of Gumboot Soup tested the band’s patience after a year of constant work. “Ahh yes. I really pushed everyone (including myself) to breaking point here. Much of this was recorded on the road between shows in hotels, venues or cheap studios on days off. I think I was the only one with my heart still in it by the end; I could tell the other 6 gizzards really just wanted to take a break. It was December after all and we’d played like 100 shows and written and recorded probably 50 songs. Everyone was real pissed off at me that’s for sure. SORRY!...” Some of that energy may have rubbed off onto the track and its sleepy nature.
The song has the least amount of credits of any song on Gumboot Soup, with only Ambrose (harmonica/vocals) and Stu (vocals/drums/keyboards/Mellotron/guitar/bass/percussion) playing on the track. It was recorded and mixed by Stu at Flightless HQ and released on December 31st, 2017.
“I’m Sleepin’ In” has not been played live but it may have been rehearsed based on Joey’s “GIZZ LEARN” playlist created in 2019.
