Songs > Ontology > History

Coming right out of “Some of Us” is a Western-sounding but existential track called “Ontology.” Like the field the song takes its title from, “Ontology” asks a number of questions about life, yet never answers them, saying that it’s easier to live by not thinking for yourself. If we don’t weigh ourselves down in existential thought, we can be free to do whatever we want. “Ontology” is a rare K.G. song, not being played since early 2022, yet its unique tone and big questions create a strong start to the album’s second side.

According to Ambrose, Stu had his own questions regarding the song while making it. “I remember Stu showing me that one and I thought it was so sick. It was like a Western, Cowboys and Indians race going on. He had that chorus thingy going on and I asked him if he’s planned on singing on it. He said he wasn’t sure yet, so I did some harmonica instead and it became one of those instrumental chorus tracks. I sang on it with Stu too, but he didn’t want to call it ‘Ontology’ at first. He didn’t like the word. I had to talk him into keeping it.” Ambrose seems to really enjoy the song saying to Consequence of Sound “whenever I hear this track I want to start galloping around the room with a broom like Happy Gilmore! It has that immediate energy in the driving rhythm from the drums and percussion that propels you into such a triumphant instrumental chorus. With a cowboy hat nod to our second album, Eyes Like the Sky, ‘Ontology’ flies off into the desert with a transcending shout that kicks against the pricks, ‘Be Free!.’”
Liner notes for K.G. state that Ambrose (percussion/harmonica/vocals), Cavs (drums), Cook (guitar) and Stu (vocals/guitar/bass/keyboards/flute/vibraphone/violin/horns/clavinet) recorded parts of the song with Stu doing the heavy lifting, recording a total of nine different instrument parts — the most on any K.G. track. “Ontology” was released on November 20th, 2020 as the sixth song of K.G. That same day the song appeared in a video promoting the launch of the band’s US Gizzverse online store. On vinyl copies of the album “Ontology” opens up side two and starts with a fade-in of the ending of “Some of Us.”

“Ontology” debuted on 2021-02-23 at the Croxton Park Hotel in Naarm (Melbourne) as part of the first show after COVID-19 lockdown and the first fully microtonal show of 2021. It would also be played the next night (2021-02-23), with these two performances seeing the song as a standalone track with a drum solo at the start, a faster pace and a high energy ending. On 2021-02-26 at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl in Naarm, it would be rearranged. This show, released as Live at Melbourne ‘21, features the song coming out of “O.N.E.” The song would not be played again until 2021-04-01 where it appeared yet again as a solo track. Skipping a show, “Ontology” would be paired with “Minimum Brain Size” on 2021-04-23 at the Riverstage in Brisbane. This would be the final performance of the track in 2021 and from here it would fall nearly completely off setlists. With 2022-04-18 on the Event Lawn at Virgin Hotels in Las Vegas, it was once again played on its own (though in a notably sloppy fashion with Lucas and Ambrose losing their places and Stu almost missing the first “be free.”) The day after (2022-04-19) “Ontology” was played for the final time, now coming out of “Sleep Drifter.”
