“[Plastic is] potentially the biggest ecological disaster we've created” said Stu in a 2019 Reddit AMA. “We've gotta stop using it completely, I think. It's possible. We've really been using it heavily since the ‘60s.” To put our use of plastic into perspective, we produce over four hundred million tonnes a year according to the UN. The result of that is plastic everywhere, from landfills to oceans, where an estimated eight million metric tonnes is held. But plastic isn’t just showing up in the water— it’s also showing up in our own bodies. In 2020 scientists found microplastics in the placentas of unborn babies and two years later they found microplastics in human blood for the first time. King Gizzard commented on our dependency on plastic with a song called “Plastic Boogie.” It’s an uncomplicated boogie with crowd vocals, a bouncy rhythm and explicit lyrics with the simple, repeated phrase “fuck all of that plastic.”

“Plastic Boogie” was the first song worked on for Fishing For Fishies. The album’s liner notes show that the song was primarily recorded at Flightless HQ in January of 2018 by Stu, with added drum parts done at TFS Studios in May under the supervision of Gareth Liddiard. There were also overdubs going from July to November in Melbourne recorded by Stu. Ambrose (harmonica/vocals), Cavs (drums/tambourine), Cook (vocals), Joey (bass/shaker/vocals), Lucas (vocals/shaker) and Stu (electric guitar/vocals/flute) played on the final track and it’s the only song on Fishing For Fishies solely mixed by Stu. As for the feminine background vocals, Lucas said during the Chunky Shrapnel Reddit AMA “It's all gizz, we all love getting in touch with our feminine side.” “Plastic Boogie” released as the fourth song on Fishing For Fishies on April 26th, 2019.
