Songs > Raw Feel > History

“Raw Feel” is the third song from Flight b741. It features lead vocals from Joey, Ambrose, Lucas, Cook and Stu and is about having differing opinions and experiences with other people. The lyrics show the dichotomy between two people who don’t see eye to eye, however they’re eventually able to break through these differences and understand each other better. Besides the personal lyrics, the song references mythology and religion. The most notable of these references is a nod to the story of Hou Yi, the mythological archer married to Chang’e, who shot arrows into nine of the ten suns that used to scorch the Earth and turned them into three-legged crows. The song also ties itself to the band’s own mythology, referencing the song “Gila Monster” through the line “dream myself into the forest of your mind.”
The band takes influence from a bunch of different artists on “Raw Feel.” Joey’s verse and the subsequent chorus is almost reminiscent of late ‘90s/early ‘00s pop hits from artists like Alanis Morrisette, while the back half has the sensibilities of Led Zeppelin’s “Ramble On” with its acoustic guitar, strong rhythm and distorted ending. Joey has even compared it to the music of The Rolling Stones and Jet.

Recording sessions for “Raw Feel” can be found in ”Oink Oink” Flight b741: The Making Of…. The first clip (5:14) shows the band recording harmonies while the second (10:03) focuses on Ambrose’s lead part as the band provides backing vocals. The third (10:38) shows the band recording the chorus vocals. Footage of the band listening to the song’s instrumental was posted to their Instagram story on August 8th, 2024.
The final studio version would be performed by Ambrose (harmonica/saxophone/vocals), Cavs (drums/percussion/vocals), Cook (organ/vocals), Joey (guitar/vocals), Lucas (bass/piano/vocals) and Stu (bass/guitar/Mellotron/organ/vocals). The ASCAP ACE Repertory lists that the entire band received songwriting credits.
The song was released on August 9th, 2024. It was later released as a limited edition 7” single for the Gorge record fair on 2024-09-14 with the b-side of “Flight b741.”

After a jam on 2024-05-18, the song made its live debut on 2024-05-26 at the Liverpool Olympia in Liverpool coming out of “Ice V.” An acoustic version debuted on 2024-05-31 and would be the last performance before the release of Flight b741.
