Songs > Time = $$$ > History

The shortest song on Paper Mâché Dream Balloon is “Time = $$$” (pronounced in the song as “time is money”). With an upbeat rhythm and bright guitars, the song follows someone with little money who notices their gums bleeding and their eyes itching. They question the phrase “time is money” by turning it on its head, changing it from a quote about laziness to one about the passage of time becoming a form of payment. It was released on November 15th, 2015 with an instrumental version being included as part of the deluxe edition of Paper Mâché Dream Balloon on October 29th, 2021.

“Time = $$$” was not played live for many years, though the band did try to bring it to the stage based on Joey’s “GIZZ LEARN” playlist created in 2019. Its live debut came on 2024-05-31 during the band’s acoustic show at the Brighton Dome. It appeared nine years after Paper Mâché Dream Balloon, making one of the longest gaps between release and live performance in Gizzard history. The lead flute part in the performance was replaced by whistling.
