(“You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party!)” is a hard rock/punk inspired hip hop track by The Beastie Boys, which was released on the 1986 album Licensed To Ill. Written in a matter of five minutes on table napkins, the song was meant to be a parody of party anthems of the time, though was interpreted as a sincere defense. Mike D said “The only thing that upsets me is that we might have reinforced certain values of some people in our audience when our own values were actually totally different. There were tons of guys singing along to [“Fight for Your Right”] who were oblivious to the fact it was a total goof on them. Irony is often missed.”
The Beastie Boys are one of Ambrose’s favorite bands. In King Gizzard’s 2022 Reddit AMA he mentioned that he grew up with their music. Their influence can be heard all over the band’s rap songs like “The Grim Reaper” and “Sadie Sorceress.”

The band played “(You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party!)” without Lucas on 2019-03-16 for Lucas’ wedding reception. The song is played close to the original with vocals mainly done by Ambrose, although Stu and Joey add backing vocals with Stu even taking Ad-Rock’s “busted” ad-lib.
