Disclaimer:This is a typed reaction to either a live or pre-recorded show. I do not go back and edit, or reread anything. I'm doing this for fun. I also might be too drunk & stoned to even want to attempt editing. So, I'm never doing it. If you do it once, people will start to expect things from you. There will be misspelled words, bad grammar, incoherent babbling, incompletely sentences, and odd thoughts in there. If you have a problem with that, I will fight you. <3

My name is Brody. Just a odd duck from the midwest who loves rock music from top to bottom. This is a fun way I've recently found that helps me stay engaged almost competely to the show. I don't care if zero people read these. <3

Shoutout Chris Dempsey on YouTube. (https://www.youtube.com/@Dempsee) I watch 99% of the shows from his channel.

Set/Setting for me: 2:57 Nov 16th. Finished my 6th day at work this week. We are Offically in peak season at my job. So, 6 days until Christmas. But, whatever I gotta pay off my FoV trip. Walked today. Shopping done for the week. Time to party. I got a big ass Smirnoff ICE and two 40 oz of Mickey's and Penjamin is on deck. I glanced at my last review from nov 10th, I instantly saw 4 words in a word that were gibberish. I just said "nice" to myself. lololol. I m such a lightweight when it comes to drinking right now, and I'm here for it. Its my only night off work. So, I'm gonna party and dance to King Gizzard. Barrio Slam was on the stereo for my shower and text file pregame. lol. Metal and HC have been ruling my air waves when I'm not listening to Gizz. Let get into it!!@@!!!!

November 12, 2024 @ The Criterion · Oklahoma City, OK, USA

Frist Glance: Metal start, very nice. Lung into Hypertension. Very excited for that.

Show Start:

OKC, Lets see what ya got. Packed house. As always. Farmer Stuy again. I m gonna have to dust off my old bibs. THERE IS GO PLANET BBBBBBBBBBBBBBB!

Planet B: I love IFTRN. I listen to it often. I will always be a fan of a metal opener. Because I m always hoping for some MOTU or Nonagon for later in the set. Thats just me. Sound is on point. I got back on tinder today. Wild place. Joey on the V, Stu on the SG. COOKIEDAWG69 fucking headbanging. Going Ape shit. The band imho, is very fuckign dialed in for liek every show. Only the acoustic shows get a little loose. Cavs being the rock that he is. sick opener.

Supercell: You know me and this song. Storms fucking rule. I will go out side and witness them if they are gnarly. I live in a tornado/thunderstorm area so its sweet. Ripper.

Converge: The concept of this song owns so hard. Amby killed his section. They sound pretty dialed. People worried about Stu's voice. I think he is fine. Cavs showing out early this show. Just fed my Baby Boy Lu-Dawg his din din. They are curshing, Like always.

Witchcraft: Wing of bat, Tail of newt, fucking witchcraft. This song is like the epitome of a metal song. Subject matter, riffs, everything. Very on the nose, but sick. Joey strangling the flying V for the solo. Amby really putting tht good arm to good use on the cymbal smashing. Joe goes back to choking his guitar. Getting groovy with it. I crack a 40, I rip the pen twice. It looks like Stu has an igloobuds bootleg shirt on. I know this because I m on etsy looking for cool shit.

Banter: Joey and the band went to the Thunder game the night before.

Plastic Boogie: Joey opens, Stu follows and here we go. OK, I had to pause the stream to type this out. Reddit had a melt down about Rainbow hat guy. I know see him for the first time. Personally, I dont give a fuck. But I probably will talk about it going forward in this review. I try my best to never stop the video. But I wanted this to be on the record. (I m so stupid). ALso, This dude has a 6 foot beaver tail dread lock coming off his melon. Think about that. His hair 1 dread, flattened out to a beaver tail. I fucking love wooks. The reddit KGLW lore runs deep. ok, enough nonsense, lets get back to more nonsense: Stream team is really good at what they are doing now. Seems like we are getting out first jam section of th night. First nonmetal song. seems about right. full speed now. Amby letting the harmonica go. That fucking guy is so sick. Pushed though the worst part of his elbow break. Owned the whole fucking time. Jam slowed down a ton. This build should be sick. This jam went soft, then, went nice, Then BAM! fucking dark. HAHAHAH THEN FUCKING BAM! Rainbow hat guy, in mid pit swinging his Beaver tail in the air like a helicopter with 2 very spun out friends next to him. hahahahahahah. Gold.

Open Water: Microtonal time! Joey on Dickhead, Stu on The Flying B. Just letting it fucking go. Joe and Stu out front slaying. Ok I don't have many words for that. Besides it was fun, and I like the band. Did you know that? could you tell?

Joey: calls out Cavs, Then calls out Amby for breaking is elbow on a skate board lololol. Amby asks who as here from the halloween show in '22. Joe talks about the sticker for dickhead is falling off that he put on in 2014.

All Is Known: IDK Cooks name for his microtonal or Lucas's but Ill try to find out. Cookie is going ape shit. His guitar is fucking awesome looking. Very post-modern imo. I haven't really danced so far. Straight rock show.

Straws In The Wind: If you are feeling suicidal, in the USA call 988 if you need help. Talk to someone, I lost a brother to suicide. I have no idea if this song is about that, but it reminds me of it. I love you. Amby, smashing his part.  I love the throat singing the band does. Very unique for America when  you mix it with rock music. Cavs slowly climbing to be my favourite drummer behind Danny Carey. A lot going on in this song, I will have to check he notes afterwards. Banger of a song.

!!!!!!!
HOLD UP: Ok, here it is. Amborse of all people finally says they named he table, Nathen. Ok, I love this band. I fucking hate the name nathen for the table. I don't have to like everything the band does. This thing, idk why, I'm going to hold firm on. No reason really, besides, I don't like it. If you don't like that. Fuck you, say it to my face, I love you jp. but the name blows
!!!!!!!

The table is out. I'mnow never calling it Nathan. Make me. ok back to the show.

Intrasport: They kind of expanding the tabel section bby a song every show now, it was 2, now 3. I'm down for it. Ofc, I'm dancing when they break Nathan out, fuck I'm, already saying it. Bullant laying it down. Tamborine in hand. Rave jam starting out broken down but somehow coming together. ALl wizards working at the table. This part of music is going very hard.  WE bout to Slay a mother fucker I rip the pen very hard. twice.

Set: Let's fucking go. This song owns. Any thing Egypt based owns. And you know it. You know I'm dancing, and kinda tipsy. Joey picks up the Novo. Like a blade cuts thought the synth. So nasty. WOOOOO! The GoPro goes hard. Reddit freaked out over rainbow hat guy for nothing. Joey laying it the fuck down. Pit looking very mixy.  Song sounding very cool.

Extinction: Everyone at the table for the Nathan ending for this set. Joeseph still on the Novo, Cavs the human drum machine, human drum machineing away. Did I say everyone is at the table, that was a lie if I did. Getting jammy. Cav's holding the sticks jazz style. This lung/hypertension is what I've been waiting for.

Banter: Ambrose thanks Nathan.

Iron Lung: Stu picks on the Flying Samurai, Joe still on the Novo. This song reminds me of the Big Lebowski. Which is always a good thing. top 5 all time movie. iykyk. Fucking shredsville. So good. I crack trhe 2nd forty when Ambrose takes control. Stu usy ouit front, getting after it. I feel like everyone takes turns a little but being in control. Between Joe, Stu, and Amby. They all lead parts of the show. OH! Cooking laying it doqwn. I'm gonna be honest with you. it gave me a half chub.

Hypertension:  Holy fuck, I m ready. They always kill this song,. Stu went full Elivs. Stu is in fukll force. He has taken over the stage. He is a froce to be wrecken with. FUCK YES JOE! Joey just letting it the fuck off. Love that guy. God this band owns so much. Just such a different vibe. Mr. Craig Cook looking hot Af. What m i? besides the canary in the cole mine? They must love playing this song. They always do it justice. I hope they drop Time Before Timeland @ FoV. If anyone reads these, Track me down. Meet me at FoV. I love to party, and I m not a douche. I m pretty biased in that review of myself. but whatever. This jam is going wild. I fucking love this band. That really do slay that song.

Antarctica: Ok, gotta play some new shit. if you have read any iof mny reviews you know this song means something crazy to me. and if you dont. thats cool. Cookie Song! I just sneezed 6 times in A row, fuck that was alot.

Hog Calling Contest: I'm Drunk, and im kinda lost. But if I'm being honest, I've called some hogs in my day. Ya, feel me? Its the midwest, its 5:30. its fucking dark in my house. Cookie is taking me on flight.

Flight b741: Everytime, I hear thesee songs played live, It shows me that it involes  everyone individualy. which is soooo coool

The River: 20 min finisher? looks like it, Lets goooo. This should be a wild ender. I have hald a 40 oz. Im gonna kill it before this song is over. And lucky for me, I'm going no where besides the bed. I woke up at 1 AM today, It's very close to bed time for me. Fuck me, I have the hiccups, just in time for the jam section. They letting it go. Stu walked like 15 circles on the stage. Cavs leaving all out on the stage. on 2nd thought, entire bnd thowing it the fuck down, LIke what do i evn say? great band smashes ending? crowd is spun? the sky is blue? The river is a long song? I almost feel lung being played. but I'm not going to look at notes. I'm trying my best to type while drunk. it's going so so, Jam is over. Back into the River. This is offically the drunkest I've been sine I started doing these. For the record. I think I need to focus on the music more. idk. they open it up for the ending. Stu letting it be kown on his flying samurai.

Stu ends it with a lots of "i love you". sweet guy.

Final thoughts: Ok, I wasnt't glued to the screen, but ofc reddit over reacted over the rainbow hat. Very typical of reddit, Good show. Bandd dialed the fuck in, I'm pretty tipsy. I love you!!!!!!!

KGLW OKC show review 11-12-2024

Intro

Greetings everyone! My name is Logan. I’ve been a fan of King Gizzard since about 2020, when a friend introduced me via “KG’” However, it wasn’t until we saw them together in 2022 at the same venue that my fandom really launched into outer space. Thanks to the livestreams, I watched every show of the tour, and had been looking forward to this year’s show in OKC since January. Here’s my review of the show!

Planet B

My buddy and I were debating whether they would start with high energy or chill. We both quickly settled on high energy and the boys delivered with this opener. I feel like this was a nice gift considering we didn’t get all that much metal in their last appearance. The crowd was also absolutely stunning throughout this entire show, so this was a nice way to feed off of that energy.

Supercell

We were both hoping for something from Petro, and I was so happy they chose this particular song to play in Oklahoma (we are in tornado alley after all.) This was also one of the cleaner versions of this song I’ve heard in a while (when compared to other versions in larger venues for instance.) My friend didn’t know any other lyrics, but we at least got to scream “SUPERCELL!” At the top of our lungs to each other.

Converge

I knew this was their next song from the first time Cavs teased us with the drum intro. I’ve really come to enjoy Stu’s metal guitar tone through the twenty dollar little B741 amp. There’s something about the bright crunch that this amp gives. I actually prefer this to the guitar tones in the studio version.

Witchcraft

Witchcraft, or “Witchcroft” as I like to pronounce it, has become one of my favorite tracks on Petro. I suppose the band must’ve listened to fans who complained about songs on that record ending abruptly when played live (not transitioning directly from Converge to this one.) I’m glad they gave us the whole initial suite.

Plastic Boogie

Giving us a bit of a break, the guys kept their C# guitars to play this gem from Fishing For Fishies. This was by far the most captivating version of this song I’ve heard, with a tasty stripped back jam similar to what they sometimes do with Slow Jam 1 and 2. Of course, a more fleshed out version came before it, but with everyone finding their groove it didn’t take long for them to start experimenting with dynamic changes. As with most jams, it seemed to morph into an entirely different song (Joey even gave us a very small Hypertension tease) so it gave me a good laugh when the chorus lyrics returned several minutes later.

Open Water

We didn’t see any of the microtonal instruments on stage before the band came out, so I (and the whole crowd) was pleasantly surprised to hear this one. Plus, it was even more of a shock since the instruments seemingly came out of nowhere and there was no break between this song and Plastic Boogie. When they play this one live, it almost feels like it could belong in the latter half of “LW” or a completely separate microtonal metal album. Towards the end of the song, we even got a fully fledged metal breakdown complete with Cav’s double kick. Also, I was pretty confident Stu was enjoying himself when he sang “open fuckin’ wataaaaaaa”. I always enjoy what they do with the jam leading up to a metal section as well. They gave Cavs lots of space to solo!

All Is Known

Next came this microtonal gem from “Gumboot Soup”. This one usually stays pretty close to the studio version in terms of structure, but that’s not to say it’s bad. Each live version of this song I’ve heard over my time with Gizz has been solid. Although, at this point I can’t help but want them to do something slightly different with it. I think the best thing to do would be to change up the feel in between sections as they do with other songs

Straws In The Wind

We nearly transitioned straight into this one after a small tease of “Muddy Water” from Cavs. It actually threw us for a loop because we didn’t immediately figure out which song they were going to play next. The moment I finally figured it out when Joey’s guitar came in, I promptly turned to my friend and screamed “STRAWS!” Something about Ambrose’s stage presence during this song especially reminds me of Freddie Mercury. I love the way he gets the crowd involved in the call and response section. This song was also the beginning of a couple funny little jokes we carried throughout the rest of the show. The first was shouts of “yeah!” on syncopated beats, and the second was slapping “MOOOOTA…SPIIIIRIT” on a bunch of songs during long jam sections.

Intrasport

Next, the synth table (who we now know as Nathan) came out, and I was able to put on my own green hat again. Since it’s live debut this year, I had been trying to keep track of how many times they played this song throughout the tour. By my count, this was number six. It was an absolute treat each time we got it, and this certainly was no exception. I think what I love most about the analog synth gear it’s its ability to create wildly imperfect sound with just the twist of a knob. Even something as simple as the sound of adjusting parameters to play another song is interesting to hear. When I watched this show again via the stream archive I thought “leave it to these guys to make four people standing at a table turning knobs captivating”.

Set

In a review I wrote for “The Silver Cord” back when it was first released, I compared this song to a track from Donkey Kong Country 2 titled “Disco Train”. I still stand by that comparison (especially when Joey retrieves his guitar and gives us some disco/funk inspired riffage or Stu noodles with the vocoder) but when any song from this record is played live, it seems to take on a life of its own. I really enjoy what Cavs does on the drums during sessions with the table. The majority of the grooves he falls into seem to be what many electronic music lovers would associate with Drum N Bass, essentially playing live Amen breaks. I also appreciate that he never does anything too busy, prioritizing the feel and overall energy but allowing the synths to maintain a spotlight. There’s also something to be said about the variety of musical textures that they are able to create. Nothing is ever exactly the same twice, and it keeps the audience glued to the stage.

Extinction

Although this is the case with most live versions of songs from SCC, I feel that this one is most at home being extended. From the slow build where the main chorus motif is traded between instruments, to the bombastic four-on- the- floor jam on the second chorus. I think Gizz really showed their multi-instrument prowess here. I may be a bit biased, but I think this is one of the best versions of this song on the tour. To me, this serves as the quintessential “synth table theme” (although I suppose now we have to call it Nathan’s theme) exemplifying everything that makes the table so entertaining to watch.

Iron Lung

This one was at the top of my list of songs that I wanted to experience live, especially considering they didn’t play it their last time in Oklahoma. Ever since their session on KEXP in 2022, this song and “Magma” have evolved into monstrous jams that see each member of the band doing something unique despite maintaining the awesome energy. While this was not the best live version of this song in my opinion, it was still an absolute pleasure to experience live and in person.

Hypertension

The end of the  “Iron Lung” jam sent us directly into the second track of “Laminated Denim”. Similar to Ice Death etc, this song has had the time to evolve into a staple of Gizz’s “jam band era”. Here, the boys gave us one of the best, if not the best live version of this song so far. Throughout the song, both Stu and Joey traded solos (Stu even teased “Antarctica”) and the final chorus felt like a massive fireworks explosion with only the biggest booms possible.

Antarctica

Still riding a bit of the high from the previous song, we sailed to “Antarctica”. This was a nice way to de-escalate the energy just a bit and I was happy to hear some of “Flight B741” live despite hearing it a lot on this tour. In the second half of the song, Joey delivered tasty references to the “Hot Water/Nonagon Infinity” motif.

Hog Calling Contest

Interestingly, this is one of the few songs the band drops down a half step when played live. This version felt a bit rough around the edges for me. However, the band still seemed to enjoy themselves with it, so I’ll give it a pass.

Flight B741

The title track of B741 is probably my second favorite on the record next to “Field of Vision”. I think this song does a fantastic job of showcasing the “pass the mic” approach at the forefront of the album. I was talking with my friend about the album as a whole about how it’s almost a better experience live because the songs feel as if they were specifically designed for the stage. We even got a slightly extended intro from Stu, which I thought was cool.

The River

This song was the one that I REALLY wanted to hear live, and served as the closer for this show. My anticipation only grew when I was able to hear other live versions thanks to YouTube and the Bootleg program. The moment Stu began playing the chords, I turned to my friend and said “no way we’re getting this song!” In between songs, we talked about how great it was that they combined jazz with metal similar to Red Rocks 2022. This version saw a proper return to the metal infusion, or as we ended up calling it “Jeatle”. The first metal jam introduced chugging rhythms, and the second after the 4/4 section was the ultimate payoff. I lack very many more critical details, but I will say that it was definitely worth the wait!

Final Thoughts

When making a direct and gut feeling comparison to this show and King Gizzard’s last appearance in OKC, I think this show was better by a country mile. Of course, part of that may come from the fact that I didn’t know the band nearly as well my first time seeing them, but I genuinely think this was a massive improvement compared to the last show (which I still think was amazing and remember fondly to this day). In terms of a numerical rating, I would give this show a 9.5 out of 10 (the only thing that would’ve made it better is if “Magma” was on the setlist). I remember Lucas throwing a printed setlist in our direction and frantically asking my friend if he had caught it. Unfortunately I didn’t walk away with a setlist, but I left the show having had a phenomenal experience, one that I cannot wait to do again.

OUHHH if not for how stacked chicago was this could have been an easy favourite, I took pictures for the band this time and the next, will likely continue to do so as it was a lot of fun. Intrasport was next level, INTO SET, INTO EXTINCTION??? Iron Lung? Hypertension? Setlist nearly designed for me, a beautiful show, though I'm holding out for silver cord title track on the synth table. Met a friend in the pit, very nice show. Talked to Mystery Jack, told me his car's bumper is attached via the same kind of neon green duct tape the band uses for the setlists, pretty cool!
